Academic Overview: Why Geology and English?
I chose to hone in on Geology because it is my major and academic concentration. A healthy degree of incredulity and circumspection are integral to the sciences, and I believe my scientific background has molded me into a more discerning and intellectually curious person. I prize my coursework in paleontology and volcanic / metamorphic petrology for embodying the scientific ideals of inquiry, analysis, and inductive reasoning.
Similarly, I chose to focus on English because it is my minor concentration, and because my wellspring of talent profusely taps that reservoir. Although science has indeed staked out a bastion among mankind's premier achievements, it is not the final monolith of human activity or significance. Humans are not mere dispassionate automatons; emotions and our relationships with others hold sway over our destinies, and literature offers us a tool for introspection and analyzing the human condition.
Additionally, language plays a key role in determining how scientific ideas are disseminated to academic and popular audiences. Hence, fluency and expertise in the world's most important language, English, is paramount.
